"You Can Do It"
The "You Can Do It" Early Childhood Program Developing the Social-Emotional Competence of Young Children
The 'You Can Do It' (YCDI) is an innovative program, which aims to help children develop positive dispositions to be happy and successful in life and learning. 'Successful' means your child being the best they can. 'Happy' means your child will like him/herself, make friends, work hard in what they are learning at kindergarten and school, be resilient and show kind and caring attitudes towards others.
There are 5 Foundations that young children need to be successful and happy.
These are:
- Confidence
- Persistence
- Organisation
- Getting along
- Resilience
These are 'big words' for young children; however we have found children have the ability to develop understanding and appropriately use these terms in context.
The 5 Foundations are each supported by a specific hand puppet.
They are:
- 'Connie Confidence'
- 'Pete Persistence'
- 'Oscar Organisation'
- 'Gabby Get-Along'
- 'Ricky Resilience'
Using these puppets as teaching aids, singing the songs written for each character, and discussing a variety of different situations will help to reinforce the concepts with young children.
We will provide support materials for use at home which helps families to promote these skills at home. Words to the songs that the children will be learning are also available.
Many children continue to build onto their understanding of these skills through the school-based 'Program Achieve'. This program is produced by the same company and offers the 5 Early Childhood Foundations as the '5 Keys to Success'.
Specific information will be sent home to families as they are discussed with children.
If you would like any more information on the program please ask a staff member.
